Past meets present in our ‘Still Lives’ exhibition of local photographs!
Meet the Victorians who lived or holidayed in this area 150 years ago!
The Brunskill Brothers of Bowness-on-Windermere took photographs of thousands of residents and visitors in the latter half of the 19th Century. At the Armitt you’ll find the stories of local families who sat for the camera, as well as equipment from a Victorian photographer’s studio. You’ll also find portraits out and about, displayed in windows around Ambleside. Inspired by the fact that the Brunskill’s sitters were in the area over a century ago, we have displayed more than 40 portraits among people in Ambleside today. How many can you spot as you walk around the town?
